Obedience

How come so many people “living for God” are so dissatisfied. The joy, peace, love, provision, and victory they are supposed to be experiencing are nowhere to be found. Instead they find themselves envious of people living apart from God because those people aren’t burdened with a heavenly conscience and can do as they please.

When you find yourself resenting God’s commands and viewing them as restrictive, burdensome, or unreasonable, you have to take a step back and reevaluate. There has been an extreme disconnect in your relationship with God and you have bought into lies about his character that are not true.

His Word says

Psalm 84:11 -

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.

If there is a boundary He has placed on something, if He has given a command to let go of something/avoid something, then it must not be good. He is the ultimate protector and shields us from things that we don’t even know would destroy us. Sometimes the desires of our heart seem harmless, and without God stepping in and closing a door/directly telling us not to do something, we would willingly walk down a path that holds destruction.

1 John 5:2-3 -

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

When you love someone, when you truly, deeply, wholly, purely love someone (and they love you as well), what they ask of you is not burdensome. You know they want only the best for you, as you want for them. So, when they ask you to do something or not to do something, you almost automatically comply out of love for that person. And also knowing that whatever they asked was asked out of love, care and concern for you. Now imagine this on God’s scale. His immeasurable love and care for you as His child, as a co-heir of Christ. It becomes easy to obey when we remember the extravagant love that He unconditionally gives, and that every commandment He gives flows from that love.

There is a mindset shift that has to happen, and we have to be brought back to the heart of God. Which is He is good and He loves us with a love beyond our comprehension. Every boundary, every no or not yet He has ever given us in response to our prayers is out of his unending goodness and grace.

Also keeping in mind that this is not our home. Our home, the place our souls will finally feel 100% complete and hearts find total rest, is in heaven. Paul says in 2 Cor. 4:17-18 “For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” The trials we endure on Earth, the backlash we will receive for not doing things the world’s way or obeying the commands of society are but light and momentary afflictions. We can bear them well knowing eternal life filled with peace, joy, and love beyond all comparison await us. The difficulty of obedience lessens when we focus on the things we cannot see. The eternal, unshakable, beautiful Kingdom of God.
